What is FIRST® LEGO® League Junior?

It is never too early to discover STEM (science, technology, engeneering, mathematics)!

FIRST® LEGO® League Junior was created by an initiative of the American foundation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and LEGO and has been developed to bring children from six to ten years to the STEM theme. The children will be introduced to the topics by the colorful bricks they already know.

Accompanied by two or more adult coaches, the teams (up to six team members) explore real existing problems such as resources, recycling, energy, or the coexistence of humans and animals. They create a Show Me poster that presents their discovery and their team, and they build a motorized model of LEGO bricks. On the "journey" the children learn to work together in a team and explore the wonders of science and technology. The focus of the project are the FIRST® Core Values such as respectful approach, shared experience and critical thinking. At the end of each season, the teams meet for an exhibition to present their results, share ideas and have fun together.

FIRST® LEGO® League Junior Components

The outcome of team’s exploring journey should include a Show Me Poster & a Model built using their loving brand LEGO while respecting the Core Values.

Show Me Poster

It’s a channel for teams to showcase their research & journey. An opportunity to creatively present what they have studied, learnt & about themselves.

  • Create a Show Me Poster using a flat poster board or tri-fold presentation board.
  • Use words, drawings, photos, and small objects to tell about what they have learned during their Challenge research.
  • Show where they hunted for answers and describe the people they spoke with on their journey.
  • Describe their Model & tell about the team itself
  • Document the work & journey in the Engineering Notebook

Build a Model

Another opportunity for teams to stretch their imagination & creativity. Every registered team gets a LEGO Inspire Set that includes 700+ building elements.

  • Build the Inspire Model of the season
  • Using Inspire Model as a starting point, expand the design using remaining elements in the Inspire Set and other LEGO elements
  • Teams must use LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 or WeDO to build and program one motorized component in their design
  • FIRST® Core Values

The FIRST® Core Values are the cornerstone of all of the FIRST® programs. They are among the basic elements that distinguish the projects from other programs of this kind. Each FIRST® LEGO® League Junior team and everyone who is in contact with the teams should understand and respect these Core Values.

    • Discovery: We explore new skills and ideas.
    • Innovation: We use creativity and persistence to solve problems.
    • Impact: We apply what we learn to improve our world.
    • Inclusion: We respect each other and embrace out differences.
    • Teamwork: We are stronger when we work together.
    • Fun: We enjoy and celebrate what we do!
